sapphic//just beginning
A guide for lesbians and queer girls who are just starting to venture out into the world of queer media!
Pop: For queer pop music, lesbian artist Hayley Kiyoko is the obvious choice. Girls like girls and her entire expectations album are amazing! Zolita’s sappho album and Mary Lambert are also must listens.
Classics: Ani Difranco is a bisexual icon who made some badass 90s indie music! I’d check out if it isn’t her. Sophie B. Hawkins is the queer mastermind behind 90s hits beautiful girl and sweet sexy woman, and is also just generally a badass lady because she’s a 50 year old single mom to two young children!
Up and coming: girl in red is a extremely talented 19 year old who writes and records her music in her bedroom. i wanna be your girlfriend has been a staple on my playlists lately. Miki Ratsula is a young alternative artist who creates some of the sweetest songs about loving women that I’ve ever heard. Give red and radiant warmth a listen. Nakala is a young R&B artist who’s entire owe it to you album was beautiful and gay.
Rap: Check out Kodie Shane and Young M.A for prime queer lady rap. Kodie Shane is my personal gay as fuck favorite. Some favorite songs of mine are bets by chynna, kissing pink by Kodie Shane, and runway by Kodie Shane.
Electropop: There’s a surprising amount of queer lady songs in this subgenre! I’d reccomend money to burn by Ladyhawke, girl i met on the internet by GIRLI, and blinders by Phem.
R&B: Queer women have been blessed with R&B godesses such as Tiffany Gouche, Nakala, Lauren Sanderson, and the internet (who also makes music by herself under the name Syd.) Give them some love because they’re pretty great at what they do!
Movies: The very first gay movies I ever watched were But I’m a Cheerleader and The Handmaiden and honestly if you’ve never watched a lesbian movie before, these are the two I reccomend. The former is a cheesy 90s romcom that puts a lighthearted take on a very serious subject (conversion camps) and the latter is a lesbian revenge thriller korean drama. The one thing they both share in common though is being amazing, jawdropping masterpieces of cinematic art.
Books: If you’re into graphic novels, my lesbian experience with lonelines by Nagata Kabi is a great read by a Japanese lesbian and an important thing to support so that Japanese lesbians can get more media and content to consume! Sarah Waters is the obvious choice for gay historical fiction and her novel fingersmith was the inspiration behind the handmaiden. Far from you by Tess Sharpe is the lesbian criminal minds episode that we all deserved but didnt get, in book form.
TV: Watch one day at a time for geeky teenage lesbians! Personal fav of mine just because most shows I’ve watched have bi girl characters but shy away from lesbian characters, and it was really important for me to get this kind of representation! Women are still valuable even if they don’t romantically love men and the creators of this show know that! Wynonna Earp is a must watch if you like Scifi, and once you’re done with those Riverdale and Sense8 are waiting for you! Brooklyn 99 is a police sitcom with great representation for bi girls and gay men.
